Wi-Fi NYC
Payphones, relics of the pre-cellphone era, may get a new lease on life in NYC. The city is testing a pilot program in which it installs free Wi-Fi on select payphone kiosks.
Of the approximately 13,000 kiosks in the five boroughs, it is estimated that nearly 50% do not function, and those that do are often magnets for low-level drug dealers.
