European Banks in Peril

The European banking system currently has numerous significant problems, including large holdings of sovereign debt, which remains under intermittent pressure. While a wave of “stress tests” is under way to examine actual and potential losses of these banks, progress in cleaning up balance sheets – including recognizing losses – has been slow.

None of this should make the United States feel confident about the strength of the European financial system.
