Synthetic marijuana is sold under many names, including K2, fake weed, Yucatan Fire, Skunk, Moon Rocks and several others. All of these products contain dried, shredded planet material and chemical additives that give the drug its mind-altering effects.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse says that synthetic marijuana is popular among young people due partly to the misconception that it is safe and partly because it is difficult to detect in standard drug tests.
But recently, the CDC reported 16 cases of acute kidney injury from exposure to synthetic marijuana. None of the patients had a history of kidney disease.
