When Joe Nocera and Bethany McLean wrote their excellent book outlining the unfolding Financial Crisis of 2008, they borrowed the title from Shakespeare, "Hell is empty, and all the devils are here".
Their main conclusion was that there was enough blame to be distributed among Washington, Wall Street, Banks and borrowers, but one of the principal devils whose arrogance and incompetence contributed mightily to the Crisis and the need for hefty bailouts was American International Group.
And now, 4 years later, these wretched souls are suing the U.S. government over the $182 billion federal bailout widely considered to have rescued them from the brink of extinction. I suppose, that's what passes for gratitude among the ranks of insurance giants and other financial moguls.
