Ransomware Threats...Mostly Baloney

Ransomware is a label for malware that cripples PC's by encrypting files and displaying a ransom note demanding payment to restore control to the owner. This extortion racket has been in use for at least six years, but until recently, it was rare, ineffective and seen mostly in Eastern Europe.

But a month ago, a report described the rapid expansion of ransomware into Western markets, and it detailed the millions of dollars criminals have reaped from their scams.

Interestingly, the report also documented the impotence of most ransomware to carry out any threats, and so it advised victims not pay any ransoms. Instead, they should  remove the malware with a free tool like, Norton Power Eraser.
