Wastebook 2012

In the spirit of the late Senator William Proxmire's Golden Fleece Award, current Senator Tom Coburn has listed some of the year’s most wasteful government spending projects in his Waste Book.

Examples of wasteful spending in Wastebook 2012:

• $91 million in tax loopholes for the NFL, NHL and PGA
• $300,000 to promote caviar consumption and production
• $325,000 to develop “RoboSquirrel"
• $505,000 to promote specialty shampoo and other beauty products for cats and dogs
• $350,000 study on how golfers might benefit from using their imaginations
• $516,000 to develop a video game called “Prom Week”
• $25,000 for the 2012 Alabama Watermelon Queen tour
