First Man on the Moon

On July 20, 1969, the lunar module of Apollo 11 landed on the Moon. Six hours later, on July 21, Neil Armstrong became the first man to step on the surface of the moon. Soon after, he was joined by Buzz Aldrin. After roaming about collecting samples and such for some time, they returned to the lunar module, successfully rendezvoused with the lunar capsule piloted by Michael Collins and returned home safely to Earth.

Though the scientific necessity of manned missions is dubious, and one could argue that great resources were expended in a less-than-productive manner, there is no doubt that the first and subsequent moon-landings were among the greatest engineering feats ever accomplished by man.
